Bus lanes ruled out in Dingley

16 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
DINGLEY Village residents are claiming a victory for "people power" after Mordialloc MP Janice Munt announced VicRoads will not be installing designated bus lanes along Centre Dandenong Road through the shopping centre.

She said the bus lanes would not be considered until the completion of the $80 million stage three of the Dingley Arterial (from Perry Road to Springvale Road, Keysborough), which is due to start in October.

The proposal by VicRoads for the bus lanes was extremely unpopular with Dingley Village residents, as Ms Munt discovered when she doorknocked homes.

"After I shared the concerns of residents with Minister for Roads Tim Pallas, he agreed that construction of a bus lane along Centre Dandenong Road should not be considered until stage three of the arterial is complete," Ms Munt said.

It is not known when the section will be completed. The government has not yet called for tenders for the project.

Kingston Council called a meeting at Kingswood Primary School hall in Dingley last Friday week, which was attended by about 300 people. Present were Kingston mayor Steve Staikos, Ms Munt, Liberal MP Inga Peulich, her son Cr Paul Peulich and representatives of VicRoads.

Earlier, a survey of more than 1000 residents carried out by a group against bus lanes showed opposition at 98 per cent.

Cr Staikos said the council had not advocated the bus lanes.

"The council's No.1 priority is for through traffic to have an alternative route so that Centre Dandenong Road can be used primarily for local traffic," the mayor said.

When Ms Munt responded to Dingley Village residents about their concerns about the bus lanes she said in an email that she was unaware of the proposed works until she was contacted by residents.

However, Ms Peulich told Parliament last Tuesday that Ms Munt should have known about the bus lanes proposal. It was announced in a joint press release by Mr Pallas, Carrum MP Jenny Lindell and Ms Munt on September 9, 2009.

On the day before the meeting, Dingley Village residents received a letter from Ms Munt, stating the bus lanes had been proposed by the City of Kingston.

In fact, traffic calming works had been proposed by the South East Integrated Transport Group - comprising councils in the region and VicRoads - in 2005, which noted that Centre Dandenong Road was a principal bus route. It seems VicRoads interpreted this as meaning the group wanted bus lanes.

Ms Peulich told Parliament that the bus lanes were in preparation for a bus expressway "that would have ruined an entire neighbourhood".

"I call on the minister to abandon these plans forthwith, to make sure that alternate routes are found for a bus expressway and to keep this road for local buses and local traffic."
