MORDIALLOC Creek users have banded together to demand Kingston Council and the state government fix the creek's long-standing problems.
Top of the list is dredging of the heavily silted creek, which they say has not happened for more than 20 years apart from spasmodic efforts at the creek's mouth, by Parks Victoria.
A group calling itself Mordialloc Creek Community has been formed in response to the council's proposed Mordialloc Creek master plan for which the month-long community consultation concluded on Friday, June 4.
The group says the master plan deals only with the creek's precinct and neglects its health.
Members so far are Allnutt Boat Hire and Allnutt Marine, Blue's Boathouse, Mordialloc Motor Yacht, Yachting Victoria, Mordialloc Boating and Angling Club, Mordialloc Sailing Club and Mordialloc Sea Scouts.
Spokesman Paul Cahir says the council has neglected the creek for years (Letters, 8/6/10) while collecting $240,000 a year in mooring fees from the 330 boat owners who tie their craft up at Mordialloc.
He said boats were not able to enter or exit except at high tide. Boats, such as his six-metre yacht, lie on foul mud or rocks at low tide, damaging keels.
Mr Cahir told The Independent there were broken moorings, a broken concrete retaining wall at Lamberts Island that was a safety hazard for Sea Scouts who have their clubhouse on the island, and seven moorings that were neglected.
Two weeks ago a policeman using a power ski became bogged in the mud. "At low tide the stench is overpowering when you are sitting on the deck at the Bridge Hotel [Doyle's]," Mr Cahir said.
The group says the proposed master plan does not cross-reference with the already approved 2004 Mordialloc Pride of the Bay structure plan, in which many of the current complaints were identified.
"Sadly, little of the action recommended for the creek has occurred since then. Instead we get more analysis. This is paralysis by analysis," the group states in its newsletter.
Kingston CEO John Nevins said it would cost $7.5 million-$8 million to dredge from the entrance to the railway bridge. The council had surveyed the level of siltation and was negotiating with Melbourne Water to dredge to reduce the level.
Mordialloc Creek Community intends to hold a rally on the northern bank of the creek on Sunday.
